• Yes is no, and no is yes – perhaps one of the very first things that will strike you as odd here is that head gestures don’t quite work the same way you are used to seeing them. Rather, they work, but the opposite way. People here will nod their head to convey a negative response, and they will shake their head as a sign of affirmation. This may be quite confusing at first, but you will get to distinguish this local trait quite fast.
• Bulgaria is a major producer of rose oil – by ‘major’ think about 70% of the world’s rose oil, which originates from this small country. This product is essential in the cosmetic industry, where it enters shampoos, soaps, perfumes and a whole lot of other such products. Visitors here can get a taste of what it is like to collect the precious plants used in the making of the product by visiting Kazanlak and its major rose festival.
• Hike the highest peak on the Balkans – Bulgaria is home to Rila mountain, which is the location of the highest peak on the Balkan peninsula. Musala peak stands tall at 2925m., though you should not let that scare you. There is a hiking trail to the peak, which is only moderate in difficulty and provides for an exciting experience to all who like such outdoors activity. • There is quite a strong national alcoholic drink here – Rakia is a traditional drink that you can find everywhere in the country. It is quite strong, starting from around 40‰ alcoholic content minimum. It is made from fermented fruit, typically grapes, peaches, pears, plums or a mix of them. A lot of Bulgarians make their own homemade rakia, which they like to drink at the start of their meal.
• The celebration of spring in March – March is all about celebrating spring in Bulgaria. That is where celebrations in the name of Baba Marta (Grandmother March) take place. People exchange martenitsas – small tassels made of red and white yarn. These are interesting adornments, which are either pinned on the attire or go as bracelets around the wrist. It is said that you should only take off your martenitsa after you see a tree in bloom or a stork – both being signs that spring has come to the country.
